What are Highlights

Hair highlighting is changing hair colour using lighter hair colour to make the hair brighter and lighter in colour. Highlights are used to add dimension to the hair.

Highlighted hair vs coloured hair

Hair colouring is dyeing the entire head of hair one colour while highlighting is the process of changing the colour of streaks of your hair. Generally, coloured hair is bolder than highlighted hair, which results in a more natural look. Highlighted hair doesn’t have to look natural, however. Purple highlights look very striking in black or dark brown hair.

Highlights and lowlights

There are many options when it comes to colouring your hair. The possibilities are endless, from partial and full highlights, lowlights, balayage, and all-over colour. Whereas highlights lighten the hair, lowlights add dimension with strands of hair that are of a darker colour than highlights but still are lighter than the darkest parts of the natural hair colour. Combined, lowlights and highlights give the illusion of volume, depth, and texture.

Hair colour for blonde hair

Highlights are generally complimentary colours for the natural hair colour. The hair will generally have blonde or very light brown highlights for blonde hair. Hair with blonde highlights can be as subtle or as eye-catching as you want. From a beachy, sun-kissed look to a more ashy blonde, your hair colour is a great medium to express yourself.

Hair colour for black hair

For dark hair, such as black hair, adding brown, blonde, or even auburn highlights can add depth and dimension to the hair.

Hair colour for brown hair

Blonde highlights are the most common for people with brown hair. Lighter shades of brown can also create subtle shine and dimension, whereas blonde highlights can create contrast.

Hair colour for grey hair

For people with naturally grey hair, the possibilities are endless. Depending on the shade of grey, bleaching before adding a lighter colour may not be needed. Purple highlights, or highlights in other fun colours such as blue or red, are popular and can add a fun pop of colour. Having highlights instead of a whole head of colour, such as blue or purple, is more low maintenance than having your entire head blue.

Visit your beauty salon

It is very easy to accidentally damage your hair by bleaching or dying your hair yourself. Not properly caring for dyed, bleached and treated hair can result in split ends, an irritated scalp, and unhealthy, damaged hair. It is always recommended to visit your hair salon and have a professional stylist do any work on your hair.
